📼 A little behind-the-scenes tape TLC for this VHS-C reel on YouTube
When you bring in your memories for VHS tape transfer, you’re not just giving us a bit of plastic — you’re trusting us with memories that may not have been seen for years, sometimes decades. That’s why before any transfer begins, every tape goes through a careful checking and preparation process to assess if it needs any video repair.
The reality of old video tapes
VHS tapes are particularly prone to issues as they age and sometimes require video repair. The tape itself can degrade, dust and residue can build up, and playback equipment can struggle if it isn’t properly maintained. One of the most common problems we see is dirt on the tape which then gets transferred on to the video heads, which can result in:
- No picture showing at all
- Flickering or distorted images
- Dropouts or lines across the screen
The good news? In most cases, these issues can be improved, or completely resolved, with the right care.
Our first step: test and assess
Before we begin the VHS tape transfer, we always test the tape. If the footage doesn’t immediately appear, we don’t just press on and hope for the best. Instead, we stop and assess what’s happening.
This is a crucial stage. Rushing a VHS tape transfer that isn’t playing properly can lead to poor-quality transfers or, worse, damage to the tape itself.
Gentle cleaning makes a big difference
If we suspect dirty video heads, we’ll carefully clean them using isopropyl alcohol and a gentle, controlled method. This helps remove residue and build-up that naturally occurs when working with older media.
Once cleaned, we re-check the tape, and very often, that’s all it takes for the picture to come back through clearly.
It’s a small step, but it can make a huge difference to the final result.
Why this matters for your memories
Every tape is different. Some play perfectly first time, others need a bit of extra attention. By taking the time to check, clean and test before transferring, we give your footage the best possible chance of being captured clearly and safely.
The goal: the best version possible
Our aim is always the same: to get the clearest, most stable version of your footage that the tape will allow, while keeping the original safe.
If you’ve got VHS tapes that you’re unsure about, whether they haven’t been played in years or didn’t work last time you tried, a proper check can make all the difference.
Because when it comes to preserving memories, taking a little extra care is always worth it.
